Mediterranean Diet Lower Macular Degeneration Risk

People who adhere to the Mediterranean diet (MeDi) are found to have a lower risk of developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD) according to a study published in Ophthalmology.

A Mediterranean Diet is one that is rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes and fish.

Researchers examined correlations between the incidence of advanced AMD and compliance with the MeDi in two European population-based prospective cohorts. Those in the studies that had a high MeDi score had a notably reduced risk for developing advanced AMD compared to participants who had a low MeDi score.

The study findings helped reinforce the importance of eating a diet rich in fruits, veggies, legumes and fish to help prevent the onset of age-related macular degeneration.*
