Swimming goggles raise intraocular pressure

swimming-gogglesResearchers recently evaluated the effect that swimming goggles have on intraocular pressure (IOP). Researchers found that swimming goggles caused an acute intraocular pressure elevation.

Thirty-five people participated in the cross-sectional study. Researchers performed an Ocular Perfusion Pressure test, Goldman applanation tonometry and measured the Ocular Pulse Amplitude prior, during and after use of the swim googles. Researchers found that the intraocular pressure rose dramatically after 2 minutes of wear but after removal the IOP decreased significantly.

The findings of this study do raise concerns for patients who are at a high risk for developing glaucoma or the progression of glaucoma.*
