A new device called the Portable Eye Examination Kit (PEEK) Retina is being developed by Peek Vision and it will connect to smartphones and allow doctors to perform complete and affordable eye exams.

The Peek Retina works by clipping onto a smartphone camera and they physician is then able to examine the retina. High-quality images are produced by the Peek Retina and these images can then be saved as a reference point to track progress or used to get a second opinion.

A prototype of the device has been tested in remote areas of the world that have little or no access to eye care and has had promising results. The device is able to diagnose eye conditions like glaucoma and cataracts. This new technology would allow more eye exams to be performed and would be extremely beneficial in prisons or nursing homes. Developers are hopeful that the Peek Retina will be available by October 2015 and the initial price would be around $95.*
